Fils d'un médecin, spécialisé dans l'homéopathie, Marshall P. Wilder est recensé avec sa famille à Seneca (New York) en 1860, puis à New York en 1870. Il fait ses études dans les écoles publiques de Rochester, Hartford et New York. Il commence comme colporteur avant de rentrer à la Bradstreet's Commercial Agency, avec un salaire de $2 par semaine:
While here he first used his abilities to entertain, as a business commodity, charging 50 cents a night. Finally, his entertainments became so frequent, the price rising as the demande grew, that he found it expedient to leave Bradstreet's and devote all his time entertaining.

Homme de petite taille, il commence ainsi sa carrière dans les années 1880 et, dès 1885, il se rend à Londres :
Mr. Marshall P. Wilder, an American humorist, has arrived in London. He is evidently a gentleman of rapid action. He has only been four days in London and his visiting card is emblazoned with "Savage Club, Savoy, W.C." I know men who have belonged to this club ten years who have not yet thought to print their Club address on their card. Marshall P. is evidently "all there," and fires his gun quickly. He gave the Savages on Saturday a "taste of his quality," and they were delighted.

Il semble alors avoir acquis une telle popularité qu'il aurait attiré l'attention du Prince de Galles, devenu par la suite le roi Edward VII, et de nombreux aristocrates. Il connaît aussi un certain succès aux États-Unis et tient la vedette à Boston (1885, 1887), Batavia (1888), Norton (1888), Detroit (1889), New York (1885, 1890, 1892, 1896), Fall River (1891), Paterson (1892), Philadelphie (1892), Portland (1893), Meridien (1894) :

Of Marshall P Wilder who appears in the Star course of entertainments here this year a well-known critic says : "He conformed to none of the rules of art that prescribed he should appear just so for one character find some other way when personating a different character He simply buttoned or unbuttoned his coat turned up his collar tumbled his hair (right before the audience) and became transformed into the very likeness and personality of the man woman or child he represented. In this he shows genius — art unsupported by artifice. Volumes would only tell what was said, suggested, described praised in this wonderful and unique little man”.

Il est fréquemment à l'affiche à New York, où il réside, en 1895, 1896 et 1897. Dans She Died for Love (1897), il interprète six rôles et la même année, en juin, il est de retour à Londres.
C'est probablement au cours de la seconde moitié de l'année 1897 ou au début de l'année 1898 qu'il faut situer le tournage de Marshall P. Wilder.

Il obtient également une reconnaissance internationale, lors de son voyage, en 1904-1905, qui va le conduire dans de multiples pays : Hawai, Japon, Chine, Manille, Ceylan, Egypte et Italie. Il est alors accompagné par son épouse Sophia Cornell Hanks.

En 1905, la revue Theatre Magazine publie un montage "The Evolution of a Laugh", montage de sept physionomies.

La famille est recensée, à Atlantic City, en 1910. En janvier 1914, Marshall Wilder rédige son testament et décède en janvier 1915.
