GOOD FRIDAY
A Graphic Description of the Passion Play at Coyoacan
[…]
Excellent order prevailed, chiefly owing to the untiring efforts of the progressive Mayor of Coyoacan, Mr. A. Hegewisch, who was ably seconded by Alderman, V. M. Garcés.
Besides the characters already mentioned, the following was the cast:
Pilate………………………………………….. Santiago Ibarra
Annas…………………………………………. Guillermo Ayala
Caiphas………………………………………. Diego Ayala
Longinus………………………………….... Tomas Mesa
Herod…………………………………………. Eugenio Medinas
Simon of Cyrene………………………… Cruz Rivas
Crier....................................... Manuel Rivas
Angel..................................... Manuela Mariscal
The picturesque scene will not perish and through the modern miracles of science, will be exhibited in far-off New York. Mr. Gray Latham was present with his eidolograph and took a series of views for exhibition in the eidoloscope. The apparatus worked well, consuming about 300 yards of film and taking about 20,000 views. With its gasoline motor, and complicated, smoothly-working mechanism, it was an object of unmitigated wonder to the untutored crowd of poor people. Mr. Latham got views of the several stages of the procession and of the scene on Calvary terminating with the elevation of the Cross. Through the courtesy of Mr. Hegewisch and the church authorities, the representation was advanced somewhat to enable Mr. Latham to avail himself of the daylight. The eidoloscope shows a scene in the most realistic and life-like manner possible, that is to say with all the vividness of actuality, leaving little or nothing to the imagination, and so unique a spectacle as that of yesterday will certainly excite great interest wherever it is exhibited. Who knows that within a few years these picturesque customs will not die out?
Among the persons present were: [...], Lauste [...] and Mr. Gray Latham.
